October/November update

Friday, December 23rd, 2011

I’ve been super busy since mid Ocotober getting a heap of art ready for a bunch of shows. I’ve not exhibited anything all year, but just managed to show at 4 exhibitions in as many weeks. The first one was held down on the Gold Coast at Sneak and Destroy‘s annual One Offs show, at Comb Gallery/Neverland Bar. It was in a pretty rad little space out the front of Neverland and there was a really great turn out. We only got down there for a short visit but it was great to catch up with a heap of mates and check out some impressive works, with all artists starting out with a blank pair of Vans.

The next week Red Bull and Laced organised the awesome “Mo Munny Mo Problems” show in the alley behind Laruche in the valley. The talent was amazing, such a great array of artists and heaps of crazy ideas. You can check out a heap of pics the boys from Project 4000 took here, and a sweet vid of the night is up on Vimeo.

Then the very next night we headed back down to the Goldie for The 360 Project‘s One x One x One show. ¬†Again there was a really impressive range of ideas on display across a bunch of skate decks. I also did some live drawing on the night with a couple mates, Josh KID9 Thorsen and Ryan RyRy Parsons.

I had heaps of fun painting my deck for the One x One x One show, so I was pretty stoked to be invited to paint another for the Board show which is currently on until the start of February at the National Gallery of Victoria. From the photos I’ve seen so far, it looks like another great show the girls from Just Another Agency have organised, and I’m keen to get down there and check it out. The decks are now all up for sale too, click the Board – NGV Studio section here.

And if that wasn’t enough hands on art for one month, I got commissioned to paint up one of Kid Robot’s Krackas. I’m really happy with how he turned out, hope he likes his new home. I’ll post up some pics of him soon (though theres a lil sneak preview of him if you go digging through my SQUIDTANK account on Instagram)!

‘X Show 08′ at Juggler’s

Tuesday, November 25th, 2008

My final show for the year is going to be at Juggler’s Art Space, opening on Dec 12. It should be a good show, with a wide range of artists who’ve exhibited at Juggler’s throughout 2008.

Heres a sneak peak of what I’ve got for it so far (a few still need to be finished off). I’ll post up more detailed images on once they’re all complete.

Lifestyle Showdown

Tuesday, August 19th, 2008

Well after close to 25 hours of painting, I’ve finally finished my last piece for the BARI fest. This is another acrylic on canvas piece, about 76cm x 61cm. I’m glad to have finished this work and am quite proud of it, but it certainly is stressful trying to complete such a large painting with a looming deadline. I doubt I’ll do another piece as complex as this until I have a lot of spare time ahead of myself.

I’m also going to need to find a better way to photograph my paintings as the colours in these images aren’t particularly accurate.

Good Chef, Bad Chef

Thursday, August 14th, 2008

Heres two of my new characters I’d briefly mentioned in an earlier post. I’ve been thinking about subjects and themes to tackle in my work lately, and one thing I think more and more about each day is food. In particular trying to eat well and avoid junk food (I haven’t mastered this just yet, but almost). These guys will be appearing in a few more pieces over the coming months, including my last piece for BARI fest. I was hoping to have it up tomorrow, but it may not be up until early next week as I’m fighting off a cold at the moment and don’t feel too energised to paint.

Worth Remembering?

Monday, August 11th, 2008

Heres my second piece for the BARI fest. Its another acrylic piece on canvas coming in at 61cm x 45cm. 3 more to go, they’ll all be up by the end of the week (they HAVE to be).

Heres my first of 5 pieces for BARI fest. Its one of the largest pieces I’ve done (apart from the libertine doors), but its still only 24″ x 30″. I’ve always loved creating textures with paint, and am trying to find a way to combine this with my characters. I’m pretty happy with how this turned out (pretty much how I imagined it in my head). Acrylic on canvas.

Heres a detailed shot of the character.

Hair and Beauty Expo

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008

Yes, it was as weird as it sounds. I got a call from the Libertine guys Sunday morning to do some more ‘live painting’ at, of all places, the Hair and Beauty Expo. For whatever reason, the guys were given space there, and filled their two areas with turntables n speakers, copies of the brand new magazine, along with a couple past issues, and all the artworks they’ve gathered from the past few shows. They had two new blank doors ready to go which I painted on Sunday and Monday.

Hair 01

This is the first door I painted for the guys, down the Gold Coast a few months ago.

Hair 02

This was the first door I painted, on Sunday. I took the ‘hair’ theme from being surrounded by hundreds of hair product stands, and whipped up this pic. I was quite happy with how it turned out.

This door was done on Monday, and is a little unfinished, I’ve still got to add some framing around the outside of the door to complete it. Below are a couple of shots of how one of the Libertine areas was set up, with all the past doors (from left to right, Kid9, Team Kitten, Shauno, Shauno, Shauno, Gimiks, Can’t Sleep, Kid9).

Libertine Art Attack photos

Monday, July 14th, 2008

As promised, here are some photos from Friday night’s Libertine art show on the coast. Instead of painting on doors like last time, I was given a large piece of clear perspex to work on. It was a little challenging, but great fun and something I’d do again. It was made all the more challenging by having to paint in reverse, not only was the text written backwards but all the layering had to be done in reverse (outlines first rather than last).

Libertine Art Attack Preview

Wednesday, July 9th, 2008

Heres a look at two of the pieces I’ll be showing this Friday at Elsewhere on the Gold Coast. I’m hoping to get one more finished before the show. These were both painted on some old bits of wood I got a hold of.
